UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion of 10 years of membership in teh United Nations
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the people of Montenegro on the 10th anniversary of the country’s independence. Montenegro has made notable progress, particularly in state building and numerous reforms on its path to joining the European Union.
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of Montenegro’s membership in the United Nations. Although one of the youngest Member States, your country has contributed to a wide range of UN goals and the promotion of peace, development and good neighbourly relations in southeastern Europe.
ou also played an active role in shaping the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ties between Montenegro and the United Nations continue to deepen. Thanks to the dedicated implementation of the Delivering as One approach, there has been progress in expanding education, childcare, the inclusion of people with disabilities, the integration of refugees, democratic governance and other areas that are crucial to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
I also thank Montenegro for enabling the UN family to work under one roof – at the UN Eco House, which is a testament to the country’s commitment to sustainable development and reduction of CO2 emissions.
As we look to the future, you can take pride in your country’s place among the family of nations. In an era of integration and interconnection in which no country can solve challenges on its own, progress and development depend on collaboration. I look forward to continuing our close and positive partnership in the years to come.
