Human Rights Declaration at the heart of the UN Day 2018
26 October 2018
The protection of human rights starts in small places, close to home, close to the individual and the neighbourhood.
Montenegro remains a reliable partner and promoter of UN policies in all areas. To be more specific, in the field of human rights, we do not intend only to guarantee the protection of human rights, but also to promote and respect human rights proactively, and above all to meet our international obligations.
Milo Đukanović, President of Montenegro
The 70th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights was at the heart of this year’s United Nations Day, which is being celebrated worldwide to mark 24 October 1945 when the UN Charter was officially adopted.
In her addressing, Fiona McCluney, UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro noticed that human rights are embedded deeply into Montenegrin culture through the traditional, noble principles of “čojstvo & junaštvo” (heroism and humanity) which envisages protection oneself from others, but also protecting others from oneself.
Translating the Declaration into the reality for everyone needs a two-fold approach – actions by institutions and by individuals.

‘’The protection of human rights starts in small places, close to home, close to the individual and the neighbourhood,” said Ms. McCluney by quoting Eleonor Roosevelt who was at the forefront of the process of developing and adopting the Human Rights Declaration 70 years ago.
“Montenegro applies successfully this six-pages document, which have been translated to 370 languages. But simple translation is not enough. The focus must also be on how the rights and freedoms referenced in the Universal Declaration, are translated into reality for everyone, everywhere,” said Ms. McCluney commending Montenegro “for ratifying almost all international instruments for the protection of human rights.”
Montenegrin President thanked UN System for continuous support and praised cooperation with UN agencies in the country. “The relation between Montenegro and the United Nations has always been enhanced by mutual respect and understanding that everything we do together must be on the road to further progress and democratization of society,” said Mr. Đukanović reminding on some of Montenegro's key achievements in the field of human rights.
