Sustainable Development Goals at the International Tourism Fair

For the first time ever the Sustainable Development Goals have been introduced on an International Tourism Fair. Within the framework of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UNDP Montenegro and National Tourism Organisation presented the GEF financed project Towards Carbon Neutral Tourism during the International Tourism Fair in Serbia, a four-day event which gathered around 400.000 visitors from all around the world.

Low Carbon Tourism, as one of currently leading tourism trends in the world, is fully aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals, especially with the goal 13 – Climate Action.

“This was great opportunity to directly link the Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals with concrete development efforts on the ground. Number of visitors expressed interest in how the low carbon tourism could contribute to the global development agenda,”

Being aware that climate response is becoming imperative, Ministry of Tourism of Montenegro is pioneering the Low Carbon Tourism concept in cooperation with the joint Government-UNDP programme Centre for Sustainable Development.

“Montenegro is among the first countries in the world to go towards carbon neutrality. That indicates a strategic commitment of the country to develop its tourism in a more sustainable way. The country obviously shift towards new generation of tourists, those who are environmentally aware,”

The SDGs journey on the Fair was closed by the Low Carbon Tourism awards ceremony “Win the Green Summer in Montenegro”, when number of visitors of Montenegrin stand at the Fair won valuable prizes.
